We have a pretty decent sized hammer mill and have been noticing some whole grains getting through it without being crushed properly.
We look at the bill screen and there aren't any holes or tears in it. Wondering how these grains might be getting through and if there is a way to prevent this.
Seems like it would help our yields pretty significantly if we could crush more of the grain.
Anyone else have this issue?
This happens to us on rye and wheat, it depends on the size of your screen and type of grain you are using. We find the less plump grains making it through our 3/32 screen. We were using a 7/64th screen before, but found a slightly tighter screen helped a lot. Depending on your product flow rate and HP of the motor you can go tighter, but it will slow things down.
We find we need to run a screen one size smaller with rye - so it doesn’t fall through. Recently though we’ve found that if we run the corn and rye through together, we don’t see those whole rye getting through the larger screen.
We had same problem with under sized kernels , solved it with a tighter sized screen during the cleaning process got rid of them right off the get go
