In fact, the UK was one of the more active OIV member countries as early as 1973-2004. Under the influence of the Brexit background, the UK has accelerated the pace of rejoining the OIV again. By becoming a member of the OIV, the UK will undoubtedly benefit in terms of information, cooperation and international expert services. In the current context of Brexit, the results from the global viticultural and scientific community are of particular importance to the UK.

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has applauded the UK government"s decision to rejoin the OIV. Chief Executive Miles Beale said: "As a fast-growing wine producer, the UK should be a member of the OIV and have a voice. Now that the UK has left the EU, joining the OIV will help strengthen the UK's position as a global wine trading hub.

The UK is one of the world's largest wine markets, ranking 10th in the world in 2019, with wine consumption of approximately 1.3 billion liters, of which wine imports account for more than 95%.
