This year"s Italian Wine Cities also included the towns of Montepulciano in the Tuscany region and Taurasi in the Campania region, which are home to seven well-known Italian wine regions.

Among all the strong entries, the town of Barolo won the honor of Italian Wine City of 2021 with the theme of a great journey from tradition to modernity. The impact of wine on society, landscape, culture and the local economy, as well as the virtuous contribution of wine to land management and sustainable development, were the two main points highlighted by the town of Barolo during the competition. In addition, the town of Barolo has, over the past few years, organized a large number of promotional programs for wine tourism, wine tasting, cultural and artistic performances around the unique local terroir, which provided solid support to win the honor.

Renata Bianco, Mayor of Barolo, said: "We are very honored to win the honor of being the City of Italian Wine. This is a great inspiration for us and encourages us to do more in 2021 to persistently promote our proud terroir. The Langhe region, where Barolo is located, is itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Humanity.

With the support of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, the national association Citt del Vino organizes each year the Italian Wine City Awards, with the aim of consolidating and strengthening the links between Italian wine regions and emphasizing the positive role that wine brings to the natural environment, social and human and regional economic development.
