Spanish government approves €90 million to aid wine industry

The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the previous Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, approved the amendment of four royal acts related to the fruit, vegetable and wine sectors to accommodate the special circumstances arising from the coronavirus outbreak.

idistilling wines), private storage (to provide storage subsidies for wines protected by origin) and green pruning (to reduce vineyard yields and improve harvest quality), for a total of 90.5 million euros, to alleviate the difficulties the wine industry is currently experiencing. However, this aid bill has suffered protests from agricultural organizations and associations in various regions of Spain.

The joint association of farmers and ranchers says that 90 million euros is not enough to deal with the current crisis, pointing out that the total French budget in this area amounts to almost 170 million euros. The agricultural organizations of Castilla-La Mancha, while positive about the royal decree, believe that the different regional authorities should be flexible in dealing with the current needs of the wine industry. The Galician wine industry, moreover, says that the current criteria considered by the central government do not apply to the region, since they can only benefit from a maximum of 300,000 euros according to the criteria established, while Galician wines account for 6% of the added value of the entire Spanish wine product, well over 5 million euros.
