The 35 wineries of the D.O. Cariena appellation produced more than 57 million kilograms of wine in 2019, with final production translating into more than 40 million bottles, according to data reported Tuesday by the D.O. Cariena regulatory board. The appellation bet on the international market, as always, with some 26 million bottles of wine exported to more than 50 countries.

According to the 2019 harvest data, the most planted appellation is Garnacha Tinta, with more than 14,000 hectares, representing a third of the total vineyard area, followed by Tempranillo, with 22.5%, and Macabeo, with 10.3%, the most expanded acreage.
The 2019 vintage was considered excellent, and that year the Appellation Regulatory Board also discussed revising the appellation norms to include two new white grape varieties: Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc.
