From January to December 2020, South African wine exports to the UK market were a great success, especially when buyers seemed to be attracted to higher value wines In some ways, the value of packaged wines increased by 28%.

The UK now accounts for 23% of the value of all South African wine exports and is proving to be in the top 10 fastest growing major export markets.

Globally, South Africa"s wine exports grew by 8% in 2020, while export volumes declined by a modest 1%.

The South African wine industry has been in a difficult position recently, with the government banning exports for five weeks at the beginning of 2020, reduced staff numbers at the Port of Cape Town even after regaining permission, and bad weather causing a slowdown in shipping.

The South African wine industry has also had to deal with the loss of tourism due to the Newcastle pneumonia outbreak, which has led the country to shut down foreign trade, if not ban it altogether, including at this moment in time.

To support the South African wine industry, there have been several marketing campaigns in the last year, including Braai Off in the UK and the Spectacular South African Wine campaign, both of which have proved very successful.
