South African wine body Vinpro issues open letter on wine ban

The DrinksBusiness reported on Jan. 29 that South African wine body Vinpro has released an open letter.

The letter suggests that at the moment South African wine needs a more flexible, agile approach to the epidemic, while the South African government has taken strict, even draconian, measures to mitigate the epidemic through prohibition, which has hit the industry hard. The industry currently holds over 640 million liters of inventory, 300 million of which is uncontracted. This poses a significant risk of insufficient wine processing and storage capacity and threatens the sustainability of the wine industry; direct sales have lost over R8 billion and the plight of cellars and producers is worsening.

Vinpro says the organisation has tried to work with government to proactively implement farm-to-retail prevention measures to protect the lives and livelihoods of people across the value chain and throughout communities. To this end Vinpro intends to seek help from the Cape High Court to mitigate losses to the South African wine industry. A hearing in the matter will reportedly be held on February 5.
