The collection belongs to Park B. Smith and will be sold at auction on September 29. There are 885 lots in the sale, many of which are from well-known California wine producers such as Coggin Winery, Sifford Vineyards and Joseph Phelps Winery, but the highlight of the sale is Saquenon Winery, with a total of 287 lots up for auction and a total of over 1,186 bottles.

All the wines in the auction span several decades, from Château Coggin, Château Arrozou, Château Sifford and Château Joseph Phelps in the early 1990s, to Château Montelena in 1975.

The range of wines from Château Séguinon spans the 1992 to 2015 vintages, all of which are purchased directly from the winery after release.

More than 50% of the wines are in magnums, a large percentage of which have received positive reviews from Robert Parker.

Jamie Ritchie, Head of Sotheby"s Global Wine Department, said: "We are delighted to kick off the New York auction season with this outstanding sale, which will highlight some of the finest California wines from the Park B. Smith cellar. Since November 2006, Sotheby's has had the privilege of presenting an outstanding collection of wines from his internationally acclaimed cellar, and we are honored to be entrusted with this collection of California wines from his collection for auction.
