The program will begin on July 15 and is subject to certain criteria. Visitors must stay at least two consecutive nights in the city of Reims or the surrounding area and stay in a hotel or guesthouse. Those visitors who use Airbnb accommodations are not eligible.
During their trip, visitors must eat at a local restaurant and order at least one dish and a drink. Fast food restaurants are not included in the list. Finally, to qualify, visitors must provide proof that they paid for a leisure activity, such as renting a kayak, visiting a winery, renting a bicycle, or purchasing movie tickets.
A total of 3,000 bottles of wine from 68 different producers will be given to eligible applicants (one bottle per adult). This giveaway is said to have cost 50,000 euros.
This follows news that Champagne sales were poor during the coronavirus pandemic. Industry body the Comité de l"industrie des Champagnes de France said that Champagne sales fell 32% year-on-year from January to May this year.
