Pink Prosecco boosts wine Christmas sales at Lidl supermarket chain

The Lidl supermarket chain has revealed that in the past four weeks ending December 27, sales of Pink Prosecco have increased by 17.9% compared to the same period last year, helping the Lidl supermarket chain to set a new Christmas sales high.

The retailer said it sold more than one million bottles of pink Prosecco worth £6.49, or about six million glasses, and about 7,000 glasses of mulled wine over the Christmas period.

The retailer noted that sales of its premium products were up 22 percent and that consumers also tended to expand their shopping, with the Lidl supermarket chain"s customer basket growing by about 25 percent on average.

Owner Christian Hartnagel said the retailer is happy to help customers enjoy Christmas, even though it's a difficult time for many in the UK.

Our record sales and significant basket growth are a testament to the appeal of the Lidl supermarket chain," he said.

The Lidl supermarket chain is moving forward with its expansion plans and expects to open about 200 new stores by 2022, bringing the total number of stores to about 1,000.

The UK is the largest prosecco market in Italy, accounting for nearly a third of total global prosecco shipments, with approximately 122 million bottles in 2019.
