Mexican wine promotion tasting event recently held at OIV headquarters in Paris

Mexico joined the OIV in 2016 and launched a bill in 2017 aimed at boosting the country's grape industry. The bill is expected to be officially implemented in a few weeks. It was during the development of this bill that Jean-Marie Aurand, Director General of the OIV, visited the Mexican Senate. During this visit, the Mexican Vice Minister of Agriculture announced the organization of a tasting event in Paris to promote Mexican wines.

First tasting of Mexican wines at OIV headquarters

OIV Director General Jean-Marie Hollande welcomed Mexico to the OIV headquarters in Paris for this tasting event of high quality Mexican wines. The event was a good demonstration of the strong growth of the Mexican wine industry and the synergy between the Mexican industry and the government sector. The event was attended by Guillermo Garza Garca, Director General of the Mexican Investment and Trade Institute (PROMXICO), Juan Manuel Gmez Robledo, Mexican Ambassador to France, and representatives of the Mexican Wine Institute.

260,000 tons of fresh grape production per year

Mexico produced 260,000 tons of fresh grapes, an increase of 25% since 2006, with exports accounting for more than 60%. Mexico is becoming an important player in the global market. As for raisins, production has increased by 225% since 2000, reaching 14,000 tons in 2015. Wine production has experienced significant growth due to strong domestic demand (average annual consumption growth of 12% in the last 10 years). A number of wineries have sprung up in 11 Mexican states, producing around 20 million liters of quality wine per year.

Gabriel Padilla, president of the Mexican Wine Association, presented data on the history, geography and economy of the Mexican wine industry. more than 100 professionals participated in a tasting of Mexican wines, where different wines were paired with tapas to perfectly present the characteristics and gastronomic features of Mexican wines.
