In Valtellina, in the north of the region, hailstorms hit the grapes during the ripening period, causing varying degrees of damage to the vineyards, ranging from 30% to 60% of the area affected, with 80% of the vineyards affected in the worst areas.
Valtellina is home to the Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG and Valtellina Superiore DOCG, the highest latitude wine guarantee appellations in Nebbiolo, Italy. The current situation indicates that a reduction in wine production in these two regions is inevitable this year.
