Italy's Chianti wine production to fall 20% by 2020

Italy's Chianti wine union president Giovanni Busi said winemakers have decided to reduce production by 20 percent in 2020 to ensure a balanced market and maintain bulk prices and corporate profits, the Italian news agency reported on Sept. 23 on its website.

The Chianti region of Italy, where 70-75% of the wine is sold on a large scale, is growing despite the crisis caused by the pandemic, and compensating for the loss of the hotel, restaurant and bar channel (Horeca), which came to a complete standstill during the blockade and has been slow to recover since its reopening. About 570 companies use only the Horeca sales channel and are currently in a serious economic crisis.
