The Italian Wine Cities (Citt del Vino) Association recently proposed that the Italian Wine Capital will be selected annually starting in 2021, and that all cities in Italy that are members of the European Wine Cities Alliance (Recevin, la Rete comunitaria delle 800 Citt del Vino) will be eligible to participate.

The Citt del Vino Association will organize events in the city selected as the Italian Wine Capital to bring greater visibility to the city and its wine industry.
Italy has a very long history of wine humanities, and several cities in Italy have been named European Wine Capitals. 2019, the Sannio region of the Campania region of Italy had been awarded the title of European Wine Capital 2019.
