Italian Ministry of Agriculture Announces 2020 Italian Wine Production Figures

The Ministry of Agriculture recently announced that Italy will produce more than 49.066 million hectoliters of wine in 2020, including 28.6 million hectoliters of white wine, which is significantly higher than the production of red wine (20.4 million hectoliters). The Ministry of Agriculture did not break down the production figures for still and sparkling wines in this release.

In 2020, Italy will produce a total of 21.2 million hectoliters of wine at the Guaranteed Appellation and Appellation d"Origine (DOP) level, including 13.1 million hectoliters of white wine and 8.1 million hectoliters of red wine. The IGP level produced almost 12.8 million hectoliters of wine, including 6.1 million hectoliters of white wine and 6.6 million hectoliters of red wine. The other wine classes produced nearly 14.3 million hectoliters, including 8.9 million hectoliters of white wine and 5.3 million hectoliters of red wine.

In 2020, the top ten wine producing regions in Italy are: Veneto, with 11.7 million hectoliters of wine; Puglia, with 9 million hectoliters; Emilia-Romagna, with 7.8 million hectoliters; Sicilia Sicilia, producing 3.6 million hectoliters of wine; Abruzzo, producing 3.4 million hectoliters of wine; Piemonte, producing 2.7 million hectoliters of wine; Toscana, producing 2.2 million hectoliters of wine; Friuli Venezia-Giulia, producing 1.8 million hectoliters of wine; Lombardia, producing 1.5 million hectoliters of wine; and Trentino-Alto Adige, producing 1.2 million hectoliters of wine.

The Veneto region is the rightful champion of white wine production, producing 9.5 million hectoliters of white wine in 2020. The top red wine producing region is Puglia with 5.5 million hectoliters of red wine.

These two regions also rank high in other indicators. The Veneto region is the largest producer of DOP and DOP wines, with 8 million hectoliters of DOP wines. The Pulia region is the largest producer of IGP wines, with 3.1 million hectoliters of IGP wines.
