Rafael is the youngest of nine children in the Palacios Remondo winemaking family in Rioja, and he has been making his own wines since 2004.
In the early 1990s, while working for the Mouiex family, Rafael studied oenology in Bordeaux. In 1994, he made a vintage in Australia, where he began to enjoy white wines.
In 1994, Rafael returned to Rioja to work for his family"s winery. Three years later, he launched a subversive white Rioja wine called Placet, offering a new interpretation of the traditional wine style.
In 2004, he expanded his business and launched his own namesake wine project in Val d'Oras, Galicia, focusing on the Gedillo white grape variety in the rugged and remote Val do Bibei sub-appellation.
He has divided his land into 32 plots planted with 19.5 hectares of vines. Most of them are planted on steep granite slopes, with old terraces supported by rocks.
His top white wine Sorte o Soro is produced from half a hectare of 40-year-old vines grown with biodynamic technology and is considered one of the best white wines in Spain.
David Gleave, Managing Director of Freeman Wines UK, said: "We are delighted to be working with Rafael Palacios Winery, who has managed to bring Gedejo white wine to the attention of the world for the past 16 years.
